Model ChemLab originated from academic work in computer simulation and software design at McMaster University. It has continued to be developed with extensive input from educators interested in the possible application of computer simulations for classroom and distance learning.

Model ChemLab is a unique product incorporating both an interactive simulation and a lab notebook workspace with separate areas for theory, procedures and student observations. Commonly used lab equipment and procedures are used to simulate the steps involved in performing an experiment. Users step-through the actual lab procedure while interacting with animated equipment in a way that is similar to the real lab experience.

ChemLab comes with a range of pre-designed lab experiments for general chemistry at the high school and college level. Users can expand upon the original lab set using ChemLab’s LabWizard development tools, thus allowing for curriculum specific lab simulation development by educators. These user designed simulations combine both text based instructions and the simulation into a single distributable file.

When creating an experiment in Newton, you can select from a wide range of real world or abstract objects, from the simplest geometrical bodies (brick, sphere, etc.), complex instruments (stands, slope, car, etc.), and constraints (many types of joints and springs).

You can adjust their physical parameters (mass, elasticity, friction, etc.); assign to them forces, torques or velocity; and make relationships subject to constraints. You can add virtually any object to Newton using a VRML editor; you may also export your experiments in VRML format

With the example files included, it’s easy to get started.  You can alter them and simulate again, and you will see that it’s quite simple to create amazing demonstrations. When running a simulation, the bodies start moving, guided by the acting constraints; are rotated by torques; and collide with each other as in a movie.

Actually, you can set up one or more cameras and capture their views of the experiment, storing them in an AVI file. You can also add descriptions to your examples, with explanatory texts, images, and formulas. 

Using diagrams, it’s easy to measure and evaluate the results of your experiments. Several user-defined curves can be displayed on the same diagram, so it’s easy to compare the measured data with the results derived from theoretical calculations. You may also change the units of the physical quantities.

With just a few clicks, students can:

• Construct 2-D and 3-D figures, from the simplest to the most complex, by combining fundamental geometric objects such as points, angles, segments, circles, planes, solids and transformations.
• Create expressions using fundamental algebraic concepts, such as numbers, variables and operations.
• Connect geometry and algebra by measuring length, angles, area and volume and then attaching these numeric values directly to the figure to use them in calculations or in algebraic expressions.
• Explore a figure’s properties by manipulating its variable elements.
  Observe the effects of dynamic transformations like shrinking and enlarging.
  Make conjectures about algebraic and geometric properties, and then verify relationships among various parts of a figure.

The teacher can:

• Create activities that:
  - facilitate the introduction and understanding of new concepts
  - promote the discovery of theorems, instead of just showing them
  - help model real-life situations.
• Generate classroom resources by inserting text or pictures in a figure, modifying graphical elements, copying/pasting into other software and producing high-quality printouts.

• Expand online by integrating figures that can be manipulated on web pages or by incorporating Microsoft Office® documents.
• Have students solve problems directly linked to the NCTM standards with possible interdisciplinary connections to physics, geography and the arts.
